DESIGN PROCESS

RESEARCH

All four students conducted research online and through library research. Upon obtaining a basic understanding of the material qualities of wood, all four students visited the Frank Miller Lumber Yard in Union City, Indiana.

MATERIAL STUDY

Upon visiting the lumber yard, the students obtained a large quantity of "outs." Outs are the pieces of wood that the lumber yard cannot distribute due to bending, warping, holes, etc. It was with this wood that the students learned the basics of joinery and how to adapt a "bad" piece of wood into something useable through a number of woodworking workshops that took place in the Ball State College of Architecture and Planning "woodshop".

DESIGN

Nick, Vince, Keenan, and Heidi collaborated in the design process in order to create a telescoping wooden table made entirely of wood. This aspect of the design process took many hours, and many interesting conversations.

PRODUCE

3D modeling software was utilized to aid in the production of the table in order for the students to all have the same knowledge of the mechanics of the table. This aspect of the "wood" section of the semester took from about the fifth week of classes until the twelfth.

Due to the fact that THE DESIGN COMPLEX is being created in real time, as the students are producing their projects the display section is unable to be showcased at this time. Work will be displayed in the College of Architecture and Planning Building at Ball State University Wednesday May 1st from 10am-6pm. If you are unable to see the work at this time images will be uploaded to THE DESIGN COMPLEX after the live event!
