DESIGN PROCESS
RESEARCH
Students were aided in the research process by a professor of the College of Architecture and Planning who has knowledge regarding the welding process. This professor provided students with a brief welding workshop to explain the basic principles of metal manipulation. Along with this experience, students visited a local blacksmith to learn about his specific craft and metal working techniques.
MATERIAL STUDY
The four students visited a local salvage yard where they acquired any steel necessary for the individual projects they were contemplating. Also utilizing the scraps found acquired from the design build laboratory students practiced their welding techniques and constructed a small metal sculpture.
DESIGN
This metal portion of the semester, mostly combined with glass projects, was conducted much quicker than the wood portion. Students still collaborated on ideas, but conducted more individualized projects.
PRODUCE
The production of metal projects was individual based and took place towards the end of the semester, therefore resulting in a much quicker production process.
Due to the fact that THE DESIGN COMPLEX is being created in real time as the students are producing their projects the display section is unable to be showcased at this time. Work will be displayed in the College of Architecture and Planning Building at Ball State University Wednesday May 1st from 10am-6pm. If you are unable to see the work at this time images will be uploaded to THE DESIGN COMPLEX after the live event!
